Since the dawn of time, sea monsters, both fearsome creatures of the imagination and real animals of gigantic size, have fascinated people. In Western Antiquity, the whale that swallowed Jonah and the terrible Leviathan that terrorized sailors were evoked. For a long time people were convinced that the ocean, the kingdom of the Devil, was the home of ferocious monsters such as krakens, sirens and serpents that destroyed ships and were hungry for human flesh.
